Gabrielle Selz brings over three decades of rich experience in the art world, having served as a gallery administrator, award-winning author, esteemed art writer, and an accredited art appraiser with a focus on Modern and Contemporary art. Her prolific career includes freelance art reviewing from 2009 to 2022, where she critically analyzed and published reviews on modern and contemporary art shows and art fairs for prestigious publications such as Art Forum, Hyperallergic, Art Papers, Art & Object, Huffington Post, Hamptons Art Hub, and Square Cylinder. Her extensive list of art reviews showcases her ability to articulate the nuances of the art world with precision and insight.

Gabrielle is an award-winning author. Light on Fire: The Art and Life of Sam Francis, was the first comprehensive biography of the artist Sam Francis. Published by University of California Press in October of 2021, Light on Fire won the Silver Medal for Nonfiction from the California Book Awards in 2022. It is the first full-length biography on the seminal American artist.

Gabrielle's previous book, Unstill Life: A Daughter’s Memoir of Art and Love in the Age of Abstraction, chronicled Gabrielle’s life growing up in the art world. Her father was the esteemed art historian, curator and museum director, Peter Selz. UnStill Life received the best memoir of the year award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and was chosen as one of the best books of the year by both the San Francisco Chronicle and Berkeleyside. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Rumpus, the L.A. Times, The Daily Beast, Literary Hub.

Gabrielle has enriched the academic world with her expertise, serving as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Saint Mary's College of California from 2017 to 2018, and as a Writing Instructor at the Abroad Writer's Conference in Dublin, Ireland from 2015 to 2016.

Her areas of expertise span across 19th and 20th century, as well as contemporary American and European art, encompassing a wide array of mediums such as paintings, sculpture, assemblage, drawings, prints, photographs, video, and digital and new media art. Gabrielle's commitment to the art world is evident in her active memberships with the American Society of Appraisers, Art Table, College Art Association, and PEN America.
